GREAT PRE-IRONIC PONCHO HIP HOP

Ukamau Y Ke is a bolivian hip hop band writing serious tunes in El Alto at 4150 meters up to the sea level. They wear ponchos, play Tarka flute, loop basic beats on Yamaha RY-20 and are true believers. Good news, folk music is back to politics !

The Big Sleep

Matthew Fox as sleepless Jack Shephard in Lost 03x22 (Through the Looking Glass), 2007

This is a mixtape I wanted to do for a long time. I was thinking of Jack Shephard in Lost's key episode wonderfully titled Through the Looking Glass in which everything turns up and down. Jack wears beard, he misses sleep and is depressed. I was thinking of the way he was then described by Pacôme Thiellement as some kind of a double of late Brian Wilson when he goes on the other side of the mirror, in his essay on Rosa B. And, in the meantime, I was thinking of a series of songs about sleeping, dreaming and sleeplessness and this notion of all things revoluting. I guess it is the perfect mixtape for a long summer night, whatever you do. "Whatever", I would say. Here it is.

Tracklist

The Shins, Sleeping Lessons
Mick Harvey, Come into my Sleep
My Bloody Valentine, When You Sleep
Mum, I Can't Feel my Hand Anymore, it's Allright, Sleep Still

And we Wish you Merry Summer

Roger Gicquel, TF1, middle of the 1970's.

Luc Marianni, Final Suite, from "Six Synthetic Suites" (1986).

"Video Screens Control" (get part 1-4 here) has been done with André Viaud and issued on Marianni’s own label, Delphes Records. Part of a planned trilogy called "Between Light And Sound Waves" of which only 2LP was first and last ever released. "Excerpts from French commercials and news programs are juxtaposed with cheap robotic electronic rythms, cynical frippian guitar and (very) concrete sounds".
